Abstract
Parents, teachers and schools share one important goal, students’ academic achievement. Although academic achievement is greatly influenced by many factors parental involvement continues to be one of the most important elements of academic achievement. However, urban and low-income schools tend to have less parental participation when compared to suburban schools. In addition, parental participation decreases significantly in the middle grades, as a result, teachers and middle school parents have less communication. Furthermore, the literature review indicates that many experts have different definitions and opinions about parental involvement.
The goal of this project is to implement a plan to increase parental involvement. The target is parents of middle grade students in Lake Worth Middle School, who do not participate in the school process and are negatively affecting their children’s success. Lake Worth Middle is located in an urban low-income community, for example, 75 percent of the students at Lake Worth Middle School are eligible for free and reduce lunch. The writer interviewed five parents from Lake Worth Middle School, who face challenges such as lack of resources, long work hours, and lack of communication with teachers. The writer also interviewed five teachers from Lake Worth Middle School, who would like parents to participate more in the school setting. The objectives of the program are to open communication between parents and students, empower parents to participate in the school activities, and encourage parents to meet teachers by attending back to school night.
