King Louis XIV has decreed that he will ship numerous single French women (ages 12-45) to New France in order for the population there to grow. The women were needed to settle there. They were called Filles du Roi, which means The King’s daughters. They were often orphans in the care of the church and they were sent to marry settlers like soldiers, explorers, and fur traders who were mainly single men.
