The story begins with the main character, Obi Okonkwo, who is in the court room accused of corruption and bribery. Both the judge and the audience surprise how a young man they used to trust could have made bad decisions. Obi's mother has recently died and his engagement to Clara has just ended, he feels sorry and tears springs to his eyes.
