Original Text: Lyrics

Music can be a powerful thing. Lyrics are a form of poetry that have a meaningful interpretation. “Fireflies” written by Adam Young is an example of this. First time listening to the song, it seems to be a weird and unique song. The words to this weird song has a deeper meaning to them.
The song talks about sleeping and dreams that occur when the artist is asleep. He talks about ten million fireflies surrounding him in his dream. He says, “ you’d think me rude but I would just stand and stare.” Instead of trying to catch the fireflies, he stands and stares at them. This brings up the question who would usually go after fireflies? The answer to this question is children.
He then says, “ I’d like to make myself believe that planet Earth turns slowly.” When he says, “I’d like”, he is inferring that something he wants to happen but will not happen. He would like Earth to turn slowly but, in fact, he thinks Earth turns too fast. This means time passes us too quickly. Childhood and the innocence of childhood goes by too quickly.
“ It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep.” He wants to stay in his dreams. He wants to go back to the innocence of childhood. He would rather the experience of childhood. He refers to himself as an insomniac. He is unable to go to sleep. He is unable to dream. He is unable to go back to his childhood. He is stuck in reality. He is stuck in adulthood. He also says, “ He is tire of counting sleep.” He counts so many sheep because he is unable to go to sleep. He is unable to dream. He wants to escape from reality.
Later in the song, the fireflies say good bye and he cries. He is sad to see them leave. Childhood is leaving him. He wants us to embrace our childhood. Childhood is innocent and fun, like catching fireflies. He thinks our childhood leaves us to fast and we are forced to wake up to reality.
Owl City is the artist who sins these lyrics. He created a music video to also express this song. In the video, the artist is playing a piano in his room. His room is filled with tons of toys This also represent childhood. It is another way to show how the artist wants keep his childhood very close to him. The first thing you think of when you see toys is children.
