Original Text: Statement on Civic Engagement/Volunteering

In recent years, Vietnam has a great progress in every aspect, which makes our living condition become better than over the past 100 years. The resources of volunteering activities have played a crucial role in this progress. Many students in my country try to take part in voluntary activities if possible to gain more real life experiences. For instance, when I went to Duc Son Pagoda in Thua Thien Hue province with my friend’s English club to donate our books and clothes to children whose parents are dead, I realize that happiness comes from caring more about people rather than less. Not only does this work provide volunteers opportunities to interact with others, but also it represents the unity of the Vietnamese nation.

Vietnam today creeps into the constantly developing era. However, the remnant of a national liberation and annual losses from natural disasters usually force victims who are living in rural region to lose their livelihood. May a family be unable to afford tuition for their children, so they are always in need of a good education. When government subsidies cannot give these children a best service, it is now volunteer’s turn. With the help of non-profit organization and a number of volunteers, they will be likely to break the generational cycles of rural poverty, illiteracy and an unhealthy living standard. For instance, to help children in remote areas who have no access to learning tools but always yearn to learn, Portable Mobile Library Project of Global Village Foundation, which I am taking part in, is established. Every Portable Mobile Libraries is a portable box containing 200 to 250 books; novels, comics, short stories suited to the grade levels of the schools. "Use one book one hundred ways; each way one hundred times & each time with one hundred children"- Prof. Somboom Singkamanan. Each child who hungers for knowledge is offered the opportunity to enjoy these reading materials wherever and whenever they want.

As far as I know, your country has the leading education system all over the world with the advanced infrastructure and modern facilities. Therefore, I have a strong curiosity of your country’s education system, showing many positive aspects regarding the great achievement of students and world-class teaching methods of professors. In your class, every professor uses his own way to stimulate students to become dynamic and creative in problem solving and thinking, for example. I really would like to figure out these education methods to apply in my home country, now having a great deal of negative aspects in education system. At first, I wish to build a university in which students have the chance to access to advanced scientific knowledge with a world-class teaching method in low price. Therefore, students who may live in poverty will be able to access conveniently to international knowledge.

In your classes, every professor uses his own way to stimulate students to become dynamic and creative in problem solving and thinking, for example. I really would like to figure out these education methods to apply in my home country, which now has a large number of negative aspects in the education system. First, I wish to build a university in which students have the chance to access advanced scientific knowledge with world-class teaching methods at a low price. Therefore, students, who may live in poverty, will be able to conveniently access international knowledge.
